Unit 5 Evaluation

I think unit 5 was a success, the images depict the concept of planned perspective week, however  think the portraiture could’ve been more professional, the contrast on more than one of the images was far too high which lowered the visual quality of the portrait, i had attempted to correct this through photoshop however the image was already highly contrasted which meant i could only attempt to even out the tonal range slightly.

I think my personal organisation attributed to the ammount of work which was completed by the deadline, i also think that the architectural and compressed images were rushed, these had little planning hence the faults with them like photographic noise, this could’ve been reduced by stabailizing the camera with external equipment such as a tripod.

Balmain Fashion

my group researched a  fashion house named Balmain, we looked at garments designed by the fashion group recently, we thought the metallic pieces attached to the garments were a good starting point and the dark tones gave us the idea to use low key lighting, from this after researching this, the group went and bought metal studs to be placed in our orange, this was also well lit by the reflector dish and appeared as though it was illuminous as the light reflected well onto the subject.

Flatten Perspective

These photographs are of a flat/compressed perspective, this means that the space in between the looks almost non existent mainly in these types of photographs it’s the shapes which take more of a 2D element as a subject like a person or a tree is less elongated in terms of the environment that it’s photographed in, i think this is mainly due to the fact that someone viewing a photograph is used to the relative size of people or common inatimate subjects in general, however i don’t think the same idea applies to buildings, architecture and urban landscapes as the person viewing this may not be familiarized with the subject or area in terms of size, shape or distance.

After the photos were taken and i’d uploaded them onto my pc i noticed that some of these images had noise in them, therefore i selected the clearest ones with had good clarity and less noise.

-photographic noise is a build up of distortion which is present on film as well as digital photography, noise builds up easily in conditions where there is little light present for the film or censor to work with.

Diane Arbus

Arbus is an American photographer who photographed the people of New York in particularly ‘freaks’  and people who appeared abnormal.

i think her work is intriguing and unusually good; considering her original photos were taken on an old Nikon 35mm which produced low quality noisy images with varied exposures, this ads an almost natural or realistic feature to her photos, i personally think that her photos show that good photography doesn’t have to look perfect or show intense aesthetic feutres, Arbus believed that “a camera could be a little cold” this means that her images depict true people which haven’t been superimposed or edited, the viewer can perceive these people as they would and could do in person.

time lapse China

I wanted to see how videographers and stop motion artist had made similar clips. I looked at videos from China, south Africa and St petersburg Russia, this clip is a time lapse in a heavily populated area Shanghai in China, I noticed that the angles and composition used were low down (on level with the subjects) and the transitions into different scenes fluctuated between  each each other quite rapidly, i think think adds a dramatic effect to the video, i tried to replicate this by using fast transitional scenes which depict the people in my video moving faster than they actually are  making them look more  interesting, to make this possible i had taken more images of the subjects moving to create individual sequences.

Jeff Frost (biohazard)

Frost is an American Artist who specializes in stop motion and time lapse videography, the work produced by Jeff is extremely unique and when photographic scenes for his recent work “Photo of Abstract Ritual” he collected images of wildfires, riots and landscape scenery during the night, he also incorporated his own painting skills and murals into the clip, i think the painting element added composition and a great transition effect throughout the clip.

Work by Jeff Frost has been displayed at the Palm Spring’s museum of Art and even a travelling exhibition alongside the U.S embassy. i think that Frost as an artist is underrated and deserves more credit for his work and a higher level of recognition for his stop motion videos.

Unit 7 Evaluation

I personally think that my unit 7 image sequence was fairly successful, the images were correct for my theme of work and appeared as though i had sought to attain initially, being unfamiliar with the equipment and software from the media department i struggled to upload the correct images to the computer and had to make certain last minute decisions; like setting all of the images to black and white without individual  reviewing and editing applied to them beforehand, the clip was all done ‘last minute’ as more time was spent collecting a variety of ‘documentary photographs’ for the final clip. The background music i selected for the clip is eerie and unusual, this is why i thought it would match the kind of images i had used, at some points in the clip it appears as though the images are presented in a stop motion fashion, i put these specific sequences into the clip to show more of a time based project, this is why some of the photographs are repeated immediately after each other; due to the subject changing so i took several of these to build a small sequence.

collecting all of the images for this unit took around two weeks, i visited most of the areas around drawn town centre including the Market, Library and Pavilion areas i also walked into the suburbs where i photographed  the pair of mechanics washing a car, the weather was good on the second shoot i did, this meant that there was more light and i ended up with higher quality images which had better exposures.                                                                                                                        most of the photographs have good composition, this is important for when you piece them together towards the end of the project this makes them appear as though they are moving, a change in the composition could’ve broken the sequence and made the clip look bad and unorganized
