Unit 5 Evaluation

I think unit 5 was a success, the images depict the concept of planned perspective week, however  think the portraiture could’ve been more professional, the contrast on more than one of the images was far too high which lowered the visual quality of the portrait, i had attempted to correct this through photoshop however the image was already highly contrasted which meant i could only attempt to even out the tonal range slightly.

I think my personal organisation attributed to the ammount of work which was completed by the deadline, i also think that the architectural and compressed images were rushed, these had little planning hence the faults with them like photographic noise, this could’ve been reduced by stabailizing the camera with external equipment such as a tripod.

Flatten Perspective

These photographs are of a flat/compressed perspective, this means that the space in between the looks almost non existent mainly in these types of photographs it’s the shapes which take more of a 2D element as a subject like a person or a tree is less elongated in terms of the environment that it’s photographed in, i think this is mainly due to the fact that someone viewing a photograph is used to the relative size of people or common inatimate subjects in general, however i don’t think the same idea applies to buildings, architecture and urban landscapes as the person viewing this may not be familiarized with the subject or area in terms of size, shape or distance.

After the photos were taken and i’d uploaded them onto my pc i noticed that some of these images had noise in them, therefore i selected the clearest ones with had good clarity and less noise.

-photographic noise is a build up of distortion which is present on film as well as digital photography, noise builds up easily in conditions where there is little light present for the film or censor to work with.

Architecture Old and New

the combination of old and new architectural design adds an alternative effect to photos, when two different forms of style inherently merge together to form a crossover, this makes the person viewing the photograph question the legitimacy of the image as it looks confusing and slightly surreal, as in architecture and building design the construction of two opposing styles wouldn’t be seen together, i think this adds a juxtaposition into the image which may lead speculation to how the rest of the architecture would appear outside of a photographic format.

John Davies

John Davies is a British photographer who specializes in Landscapes, Born in County Durham in 1949 he grew up in an industrial town, this would later on motivate him to produce photographs involving industry and British landscapes.

Davies attended Nottingham Trent University where he received a foundation diploma in Art/Photography.                                                                Throughout Davies  life he has produces produced a range of images all of which have expanded from varied methods of photography such as Darkroom, where he used Medium format cameras and even Digital cameras DSLRs, he used these varied methods to en capture landscapes, all of his images have extreme levels of composition some even provide unique juxtaposition elements to add more depth and meaning to the photographs

Portraiture

These portraits where taken for unit 5, the brief required that the photographed had to be taken on location, this meant that the studio and other lighting equipment from the college was not to be used, i had to use ambient lighting (light currently available) i think i could improvised to a greater extent in terms of placement with the subject and the background, as i was asking strangers if i could photograph them, i had to rush and quickly compose them with a background or change settings on the camera ie the aperture. i think that this left the majority of the portraits visually weak, and lacking an even contrast.

Architecture old and new (location)

these images were taken ‘on location’ in Lower Darwen at a derelict building site, the structure was not completed and construction was halted due to insufficient funding from the initial investor.

*photographic equipment used to record the images includes- DSLR camera equipped with a 18-55mm standard lens, the lens was chosen as the range of the subjects were not of any particular distance and the focal length would need to be variated in order to obtain images that wold offer different perspectives

This image has an even exposure, the image lacks good composition aspects which weakens it's aesthetic quality when viewing the architectural design

the Architecture here provides a ‘fairly’ good example of a compressed (flattened) perspective, we can speculate the sizing and shape dimensions of the architecture  by looking at the shadows which are cast across the building.

Environmental Portrait Photography

This type of portrait photography, shows the subject in an environment commonly associated with the person and their lifestyle or career, capturing the subject in their ‘natural environment’ helps represent their personality/character on a higher level, which is easier in terms of visual communication for anyone viewing the portrait.                                             for this kind of a photography a shallow depth of field would be needed so that the photograph includes the background or environment, it would need to be clear to enhance the image (giving the visual insight needed)
